3. As an employer, why should I invest in pre-retirement education for my     employees?

Often, employees who are nearing retirement are rather stressed and anxious. Retirement can loom large within the psyches of people who have spent 30 plus years in the workforce.

You may think that it is not your responsibility to care for your employees’ emotional well being when they are long gone from your organization.

But let me give you 4 great reasons WHY IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST to invest in a program that will help your people plan for retirement.

ONE: The mere thought of retirement can provoke a great deal of anxiety for many of your employees, which, consequently, affects the quality of their work.

TWO: We all know that stress not only affects employees’ emotional well being but also, it can actually take a toll on their health. SICK DAYS COST YOU MONEY in lost productivity, absenteeism and health insurance claims.

THREE: Countless research findings indicate that people who attend pre-retirement seminars are more prepared for the transition from work to retirement and are happier with their lives in retirement than are their counterparts who do not attend such programs.

FOUR: Investing in pre-retirement seminars PROMOTES A GOOD PUBLIC IMAGE to others and it IMPROVES MORALE amongst your workforce.

4. What is Bill 90?

The Act to Foster the Development of Manpower Training, the law of 1%, is designed to improve the qualifications, skills and performance of workers in Quebec through continuing education.

This law mandates that any Quebec employer with a payroll in excess of $1,000,000 has the obligation to invest the equivalent of 1% of their annual payroll in training.

If the training investment does not meet that requirement the difference will be remitted to the government who then deposits that sum in a National Training Fund (FNFMO).

Our facilitators are certified under bill 90 which means that our fees can be applied to the 1% requirement.

6. I thought retirement planning only involved financial planning?

Adjusting to life after work requires a lot more planning than figuring out how much money you are going to need to fund your desired retirement lifestyle. This transition also demands that you address how you are going to spend your time in retirement.

  • What are you planning to do with your life once you leave work?
  • You will now have an extra 50 hours a week of free time on your hands…have you thought about how you are going to spend it?
  • Have you thought about how retirement will affect your relationship with your significant other?

You see, YOUR retirement is not going to be your parents’ retirement because we are living longer and healthier lives.

In fact, you may even spend more time in retirement than you actually spent working.

John Dewey, the great American philosopher, really captured the essence of the retirement transition when he stated, "The deepest urge in human nature is the desire to be important."

In North America, we satisfy this very urge by identifying with our work roles. For many of us, we are what we do and we do not know how define ourselves in any other way other than the title on our business cards.

Retirement can therefore be a huge SHOCK to your system.

If you plan ahead you will be in a better position to create a dynamic and rewarding retirement.
